Before making an investment in an underground pet fence, doing a little research doesn’t hurt. Perhaps you are wondering about your dog’s breed and if it has been successful on an underground pet fence. Let’s take a look at a few breeds that do very well and a few that have a little more difficulty.
Successful Dog Breeds
There are specific dog breeds that are known for working well with underground pet fencing due to their mellow nature. These breeds include Golden Retrievers and Labradors. However, there are many others that also do well due to their intelligence. Australian shepherds, English Springer Spaniels, as well as Goldendoodles and Labradoodles are included in this group.
High-Risk Breeds
There are a few breeds that have a difficult time responding positively to an underground pet fence. Breeds that have a strong prey drive such as Coonhounds and Beagles are the most likely to ignore the pet fence. This can happen when they are chasing something interesting such as a squirrel or rabbit. For them, feeling the static correction is worth it. They would prefer to run through and feel the shock in order to get the critter that they are after.
Other dogs that may not be right for an underground dog fence include dogs that are particularly aggressive or anxious. Behavioral problems may actually worsen through the use of static correction. In regards to specific dog breeds, it wouldn’t be fair to call one or more dog breeds aggressive. However, you may do your research ahead of time to identify stubborn dog breeds. These breeds might include the Siberian Husky and Great Pyrenees.
Keep in Mind
In order for your dog to respect boundaries that they can’t see, you are going to have to train them to. Consistent training is key. Individual temperament matters. Your dog’s unique personality helps to determine how long it will take to teach them the boundaries of the fence. However, with a bit of determination and the right equipment, your dog will be respecting its boundaries before you know it.
