An Exercised Dog Is a Happy Dog

You may have heard that exercise makes dogs happy, but is this really true? The truth is absolutely yes. Regular exercise will give your dog a happier disposition overall. The chemicals released when your dog exercises create a natural high that reduces any stress and anxiety that your dog may be experiencing.

Improves Mental Health

The emotional state of your dog can be improved through regular exercise. This happens through the increased release of pleasure elevators and pain relievers known as dopamine and serotonin. It also heightens the concentrations of norepinephrine in the brain that helps improve responses to stress. No matter what chemicals are involved, scientists agree that exercise elevates mood.

Provides Physical Benefits

About half of the dogs in the US are overweight, while about 25-30% are obese. Preventing canine obesity is one major reason why exercising your dog can help keep them healthy and happy. If your dog is in shape, they will likely live longer than if they are obese. Overweight dogs suffer with joint problems and heart conditions as well. Exercising your dog by walking with them is as good for you as it is for them.

Allows Socialization Opportunities

If you take your dog out on regular walks, this is a great way to get them to interact with other dogs in new environments. Dogs become less bored and more fulfilled when they are able to play with other dogs in new environments. Allow your dog’s sense of excitement to guide you toward playful activities that they sincerely enjoy. Mentally stimulating games and toys are great ways to keep your dog engaged and interested.

Protects Cognitive Function

During physical exercise, your dog’s brain releases a special protein known as BDNF. This molecule is partially responsible for sparking the growth of new brain cells. In addition to this, during exercise, the blood flow to the brain is increased, which promotes the growth of new neurons in your dog’s brain around memory and learning known as the hippocampus.

The importance of exercise on your dog’s mental acuity can also be seen in the study of canine cognitive dysfunction, or dog dementia. In a recent study, it was determined that inactive dogs were 6.5 times more likely to develop dog dementia than dogs that were active and of the same age.

Improves Quality of Sleep

Simply put, if your dog is tired from getting plenty of exercise, they are more likely to want to sleep when it is time to do so. A tired dog is much more likely to be a well-rested dog. To make sure you aren’t overdoing exercise with your dog, consider their size and breed.

Takeaway

Exercise is physically, mentally and emotionally enriching for your canine, and it helps to keep them happy. Speak with your veterinarian to see what kind and how much exercise is appropriate for your individual dog.
